Get to know me

Hilary

Hi, my name is Hilary and I’m a Certified Practising Counsellor registered with the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia, or PACFA.

My approach to counselling is person-centred—your unique experience, knowledge, beliefs and values are important to me. I will work with, support and empower you to achieve the clarity or change you’re looking for.

What to expect

To begin with, we’ll meet and I’ll endeavour to get to know you and understand your situation, your hopes and your concerns. I’ll ask a few questions and I’ll listen and encourage you to ask any questions that you may have. My counselling sessions are normally conducted face-to-face. However, I am happy to discuss with you other options depending on your circumstances.

Counselling is unique to every person. The kind of work we do together will depend on you, your situation, and your goals and will be guided by an evidence-based approach. We may identify and explore some of your emotions; build mindful awareness and understanding around your thoughts and feelings; identify what gives you meaning and purpose; or work on moving forward in ways that are aligned with what you value. Our work together may involve processing some of your life story and uncovering what it is that sustains you and will carry you forward into the future. I will always work with you to explore your strengths and sources of resilience.

We may use techniques such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness, creative and narrative therapies. As we work together, I will provide a safe, respectful, supportive, confidential and non-judgemental space for you to explore any issues that may be distressing you and will support you through any difficult emotions and through change. Our work will be informed by the emotional, mental, social, physical and spiritual dimensions of well-being.

I also facilitate groups in areas such as self-care, mindfulness, meditation, relaxation and mindful movement, incorporating Tai Chi and balance.
